History Hearsay podcast (transcript)
Daniel: Hi there and welcome once again to the History Hearsay podcast. The podcast that deals with historical fact, rumor along with a touch of myth and conspiracy theory. I’m your host, Daniel Farnsworth and joining me as usual is my erstwhile history hound and co-host, Dilbert Dunlevy.
Dilbert: Hi folks. So Dan old buddy, tell the folks what we’ll be delving into for this episode.
Daniel: Dill, no doubt you and the listeners out there will remember a previous episode we did about three years ago on the BBC’s History's Mysteries – Fact & Fiction TV program hosted by Denis Vaughan which investigated the so-called “Midwich Time-out Incident” that supposedly occurred in 1960.
Dilbert: Oh man! I do remember. That really freaked me out. Hey, didn’t the folks of that English village of …….aaahhh...Midwich keel over unconscious one day for several hours for what seemed to be no reason?
Daniel: Yes Dill. In fact, anyone who entered the village also apparently succumbed in the same manner. Just as mysteriously, after a few hours the villagers suddenly regained consciousness, and appeared to be unaffected. Not only that, but the military established a cordon around Midwich along with the establishment of a five-mile exclusion zone around the village for all aircraft.
Dilbert: Dude, I still have nightmares about the reports of those creepy kids with the blonde hair, weird eyes and strange powers, not to mention links to….aliens, man!
Daniel: For those who are interested in that event, please revisit episode 64 or go to the link on our History Hearsay blog which has a post on the BBC program’s coverage of the 1960 “Midwich Time-out Incident.”
This leads us to today’s historical anomaly which we have managed to piece together from testimony from sources within the Ministry of Defense who wish to remain anonymous, documents secretly obtained from MI6 / Special Intelligence Service and files from government-affiliated scientific agencies, along with the findings of a closed-door unofficial inquiry held 60 years ago formed to investigate the matter. The information derived from these sources which will be available on our blog shortly, will help to form our expose of the 1964 historical sequel to the “Midwich Time-out Incident” which we call the “Southwark Church Siege Incident.”
Dilbert: So, Dan, how’s we gonna' approach this?
Daniel: Well, Dill, We’ll take our listeners through the following main elements of this incredible incident:
- In England, a child possessing an astonishing level of intelligence is discovered.
- The investigation as to how this young boy came to possess such extraordinary intelligence and mental abilities.
- The discovery of several more children around the world who also possessed the same abilities as the English boy and together shared a collective consciousness along with dangerous psychic powers.
- The military’s attempt to study and experiment on the children.
- The children’s escape from their embassies and take over of a small church.
- The army’s besieging of the church and its intent on eradicating the perceived menace.
- The manner in which the stand off was resolved.
- Implications.
Dill, why don’t you start us off with what you managed to dig up concerning the unusual young boy and the investigation surrounding him and his strange abilities?
Read on for more....
Spoilers follow below.....
Dilbert: Sure, man. Well you see there were like these two British brainiacs, one a psychologist, Tom Lewellyn and a geneticist, David Neville both from London University who were conducting intelligence tests on children from all over England on a project for the United Nations. So one day during one of these tests there’s the unusual little dude by the name of Paul with a few other boys his age tackling a puzzle involving fitting pieces together to form a g-e-ometric shape. Something that would take me three months to put together took Paul no time at all to complete. The other boys were none too pleased and one or two simply spat the dummy. In fact, when Paul did this before “it had a bad effect on the children” and his total time for eight tests “was six minutes, three seconds.” Even the two egg heads took more than two hours to complete the test! And what did Paul do? Well, word has it he just sat there completely unphased, still and impassive while exuding a creepy unsettling observant silence as he was said to do most of the time.
I bet Paul would’ve kicked your ass on that test, Dan!
Daniel: No doubt. What was known was that Paul lived with his mother and that’s where Tom and David went to explain to her about the testing project, their role in it, their interest in Paul and to inquire if she would be interested in participating. They were expecting to find evidence from the mother to help explain Paul’s astonishing level of intelligence based on the belief that “breeding tells.” Unfortunately, when they came face-to-tace with the mother, Mrs. Looran the London University duo were disappointed and surprised to find someone of low socio-economic status, who lacked interest in her son’s education, who appeared to be shall we say quite loose in the morality department and who was very belligerent in her opposition to cooperating with the testing project. Interestingly enough, Mrs Looran become exceedingly hostile to any mention of Paul’s father. On the basis of the two men’s meeting with Paul’s mother, they could only conclude that “he didn't get his brain from Mother.”
Dilbert: Well, I sure as hell don’t know where I got my brains from. Wherever it was, I was last in line. What I found real interestin’ was the hostility that Mrs. Loohan had for her own son. It bordered on hatred for Paul and wishing she had never given birth to him. Can you imagine that? Not long after Tom and David left her, it turned out Mrs Looran had wandered out into the street and was observed as if she was in a daze or trance, dodging vehicles in the middle of the road until one collected her when she wandered into a road tunnel.
When Tom and Dave visited Paul’s mom in the hospital, she told them that Paul wasn’t her child even though she had given birth to him. It don’t make no sense, man! It got even weirder when she claimed that she couldn’t have a baby as she hadn’t been touched and that Paul didn’t have a father. According to the mother, her son Paul wasn’t human and that if Tom and Dave were not careful he could butcher them “without even trying.” Buddy, that is real underwear changing stuff!
Daniel: After their visit with Paul’s mother, Tom and Dave went to her place to see Paul and found that Paul's aunt, Susan Elliot had come to look after him. She apparently lived with her mother but for some peculiar reason had a “funny feeling” that she should come over to her sister’s place. In fact, she hadn’t been there long when the hospital called.
Dilbert: Wooo! Spooky forces at work, man!
Daniel: Yes, well anyway, our two academics accompanied by Susan and young Paul went to see Mr. Harib of the United Nations who had flown in from Paris to see Paul.
At the meeting, a possible explanation for Paul’s incredibly advanced intelligence is offered in the form of a sudden evolutionary jump, an “unexplained mutation in the genes” labelled as "biological spurts." If it occurs throughout nature, then “there's no known law why it shouldn't occur in man.” According to Mr Harib, such an occurrence, would be “entirely unpredictable” and would occur “only once in several billion chances.”
Dilbert: Hey, what about aliens dude? You know like in the earlier incident in Midwich and the alien breeding program?
Daniel: Well, at this stage nothing could be ruled out and the experts could only operate on conjecture and hypothesis. If we rule out alien impregnation of the mother, then that leaves parthenogenesis, impossible as that may sound and by logical progression, the theory that was discussed at the meting with Mr Harib.
Dilbert: Partheno-whaticus? Ain’t that in Greece?
“His intellect is almost beyond belief”
Dilbert: Sure, man. Well you see there were like these two British brainiacs, one a psychologist, Tom Lewellyn and a geneticist, David Neville both from London University who were conducting intelligence tests on children from all over England on a project for the United Nations. “We're surrounded by mysteries beyond our present understanding”

Dilbert: Partheno-whaticus? Ain’t that in Greece?
Daniel: No quite Dill. Parthenogenesis is from the Greek meaning and I quote, "Reproduction without concourse of the opposite sex."
Dilbert: Say whaaaat? Ya’ messin’ with me, man! Even I ain’t that stupid.
Daniel: Anyway, moving along. It was also brought to Dave and Tom’s attention that other children, from China, India, Nigeria, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom all of whom were of Paul’s age also possessed the same intellect as his. These five other children had test score identical to that of Paul’s. As Paul and an other child were already in London, it had been arranged that the other four would be brought to London by their embassies where they would all be retested ostensibly as part of “a UNESCO research project, nothing more.”
Dilbert: Man, what are like the odds of six little identically intelligent Paul dudes poppin’ up around the world like that without fathers and without….you know….? Anywho, we next move to where Tom and Dave were staying when this fella called Colin Webster who paid them a visit. This was the early 60s during the Cold War and this Webster cat was kinda James Bondish. You know, secret agenty, Her Majesty’s secret service, MI6ish, Government / military secret ops spook type of fella. His mindset could only think of Paul and the other kids as being “assets.” It seems his job was to hold on to the kids as assets for the UK and the West and protect them from harm and deny them to the other side….you know, the Commies in case their side got their hands on them and used them as weapons against the West or tried to neutralize their opponent’s “assets.”
Soon enough, Lewellin and Neville received a very mysterious call from Susan who said she needed help but would explain what the matter was. It struck the two docs that she sounded mighty strange on the phone.
Before the two men could get to Susan, guess who arrived first at 4.30 am? Yep, Webster himself. He was in a damn hurry to bundle Paul and Susan out of their place and go with him to somewhere supposedly “a little more conveniently placed.” He even lied to Susan that he had come from Dr. Lewellin and Dr. Neville in order to gain her confidence. All’s fair in love and Cold War, eh?
When the docs got to Susan before Webster could spirit her and Paul away, Susan could not remember having phoned them and asking them to come over. Ya’ see Dave, mysterious powers and forces at work, man!
Well, that crafty bastard Webster waived a bit of paper about sayin' it was “an authorization signed by Paul's mother” allowing him to take the boy into his custody. There was nothing left to do but allow Webster to proceed with preparations to place Paul and Susan in his custody and move to another location. However, while this was happening, one of Webster’s cronies who was driving the car seemed to have blacked out and crashed the ve-hi-cal into the docs’ car causing a minor fender bender. Now get this, Dave. As they soringd themselves out, they turned back to get the boy only to discover that he had simply disappeared!
Daniel: Your conclusion?
Dilbert: Accident, my ass! Strange powers….Strange forces at work, man!
Daniel: It transpired that Paul had slipped away to the derelict church referred to earlier which had been severely damaged in the Blitz of 1941.
Meanwhile, it seemed that Susan had also disappeared while having tea with Tom, Dave and Webster as they were pondering their next moves. It turned out that Susan fell under the psychic control of Paul and the other children whom Paul managed to communicate with by means of mental telepathy and instruct them to leave their respective embassies and accompany him to the church.
Lewellin had managed to track Susan to the church but when he entered he was confronted by an aggressive dog which apparently was under the mental control of the children. Being under similar control, Susan could not alert Lewellin of her and the children’s presence. After he was forced to leave, Susan was able to confirm that the children did indeed communicate by means of mental telepathy.
Dilbert: Say whaaaat? Ya’ messin’ with me, man! Even I ain’t that stupid.

“No nation can allow brains like that to fall into someone else's hands.”
Tom, Dave and Webster returned later to the church where the latter instructed a couple of his agents to make a thorough search. While they attempted to do this, the children employed their telekinetic powers to get the dog to attack one of the men. However, his partner managed to shoot and kill the dog before it could savage him. This act led the children to use their power to deadly effect resulting in the deaths of the two agents.
After this shocking act of seeming retribution, the children communicating through Susan stated that they wanted to remain in the church, that Susan was to remain with them and that food be sent to them.
Dilbert: That’s both scary and tragic, bro. I mean were these kids just plain evil or were they mainly motivated by fear? When you think about it, they were just kids with unheard of powers: innocents with the power to kill, man! And there they were in a holy place, a house of God and sanctuary where you’d expect to find all that’s good and moral in humanity. That very church had been reduced to a ruined shell by an past evil act of destruction during the war. Could you find anything more symbolic, man? Great powers of the world wanting to use these kids for their own political and military purposes on the basis that “no nation can allow brains like that to fall into someone else's hands.” These kids having no choice but to be born with powers that no human should possess and without any moral guidance on how to use them except what they learned from the reaction of the adult world to their existence. And the ultimate response to that existence? The need to “destroy them!”

Daniel: Now Dill, we were just becoming entangled in a moral dilemma concerning the children and thde reaction of the the adult humans to their presence and the powers they possessed. Whether the children were innocents or not, it seems that fear on both sides was a main factor. The children feared that they would be separated if returned to their embassies and their respective countries, and “diplomatic hell would break loose” or worse if they remained together in London.
Any doubts as to whether the children would instantly know anything that any one of them was told or knew were dispelled by a simple demonstration performed on the spot by Neville using Paul to repeat what he had head said to the boy and what he had read inscribed on a special award given to David by the The Royal Society.
In this sense, the children became victims, or even pawns if you like in big power geo-politics whereby if one of the big powers were to have seized them “how could the other side do nothing? Every moment, they'd be falling behind. They would have to strike while they still had the chance.” The kids had become dangerous assets that either had to be monopolized or….eliminated.
Dill, I know that it is easy to view the kids as mere innocents and as victims, but things are rarely as simple and straight forward as they seem to be. The events we pieced together from the available information we have will bear this out.
Later, while the soldiers on duty outside the church were being distracted by what appeared to be the antics of a couple of inebriated local fellows, a couple of shady intelligence agents, possibly from one of the other world powers entered the church armed with machine guns. Their mission: capture the children, “alive if possible.”
The agents’ mission quickly went pair-shaped when the children fearing they were under attack, employed their newly constructed sonic weapon which they had hooked up to the church’s old organ pipes. As the lethal effects of the weapon on the agents became apparent, one of the agents fired his gun, killing the boy, Rashid.
After the tragic events at the church, Tom and David conferred with a team of scientists to observe the difference between an ordinary human blood cell taken from Webster and the cells of one of the children, Rashid. When the two cells were united, the blood cell from Rashid took over pac-man style the human blood cell. The conclusion arrived at was that the dominant cell was non-human indicating that the children were of “another species.”
I can see from the point of view of the historical context of the times the validity of the opinion regarding the children that there’d “be a united effort to eliminate them.” After all, they seemed to constitute a threat to our own species, not being themselves human and being possibly a “superior species.” From our own experience, we know what would likely befall a technologically inferior species when it is confronted by one that is vastly superior in its level of technological attainment.
Dill, I can see you are uncomfortable with this position on the matter but this had to be seen as part of life involving the “struggle for survival.” At that point in time, the children represented a superior possibly non-human species that could threaten the very survival of the human species.
Dilbert: So Dan, if we ever meet up with technologically advanced aliens from another planet then this is how we’re gonna’ deal with them? Shoot first and ask questions later, just in case? What ever happened to communication, man? No matter what those kids were, they had never attacked anyone unless they were attacked first. So, what response is considered? Kill five kids in cold blood just because they’re different? That’s like, real low, man.
Daniel: Well Dill, at the meeting the point was raised as to how human beings would manage to live with such a species. “If we should happen to disagree, they'd control us” much like the dog and Susan had been under involuntary control. In addition, whose descendants would end up inheriting the earth, “ours or theirs?”
Dilbert: Yeah bro, but those kids and the powers they possessed might have given humanity “the greatest gift we've ever had.”
Daniel: Sure, but the kids’ very existence and the powers they possessed would eventually have proved to have bee an irresistible enticement to other rival countries to get their hands on the children and try to use their gifts for nefarious purposes. In that sense, it is hard to argue against the overriding consideration that the lives, well being and very survival of millions of human beings must out-weigh that of five children of possibly another superior and potentially dangerous species.
After this shocking act of seeming retribution, the children communicating through Susan stated that they wanted to remain in the church, that Susan was to remain with them and that food be sent to them.

In that sense, it is hard to argue against the overriding consideration that the lives, well being and very survival of millions of human beings must out-weigh that of five children of possibly another superior and potentially dangerous species.
Dilbert: Well, I agree with that Tom dude and what he wrote in his notes about the appeal he made to Paul and the other kids when he returned to the church. At least he had the guts and decency to communicate with them. He pointed out that fear and terror was felt on both sides and learned that the kids felt like they’d been “hunted like some kind of freak vermin.” From the point of view of humans, Tom pointed out that the very thought of what their sonic machine could do as a weapon had “struck horror into half the governments of the world” having been constructed it was believed by non-human beings.
According to Tom, the end result would have been the death of the children especially as Rashid’s death had taught humans that Paul and the others could be killed. The only solution Tom could offer was to persuade the children to convince humanity that they meant no harm and to do so by returning to their respective embassies/
Imagine Dan, from the kids’ point of view, here they were not having any choice of being born into this world, not knowing why they are here and not knowing what their purpose or mission in life is. Now aren’t they familiar questions that we have all asked ourselves from time to time and have not always found the answers to?
Daniel: After the killing of Rashid, Susan arrived at Tom and Dave’s place in a hysterical state claiming that the children had disappeared. Tom became determined to give the children “a chance.” Tom Lewellin sympathized with the children and their plight while his friend and colleague, Dave feared what the children could become and what they might do. As Dill mentioned, Tom then headed off to make a passionate plea to the children to return to their respective embassies. The children complied with the request .
At his country’s embassy, Paul was confronted by human duplicity and the human species’ competitive, combative and destructive nature. On the one hand, he was told that they had no intention of harming him and the other children, but they also revealed their overriding desire to get their hands on the newly created weapon before any rival country did supposedly that being the “best guarantee that it won't be used” if no single power got possession of it. Paul had probably found himself psychically inundated with the forces of human adult fear and desperation to obtain power and advantage and to use the children and their abilities as tools to achieve the authorities’ political and military goals. “We need your abilities, Paul” can be read as “we must have your abilities.” “We want you to feel......perfectly at liberty” can be read as “we want to control you and your abilities so we don’t fall behind or are open to surprise attack.”
This charade of finding a diplomatic solution had most likely been replicated among the other embassies, resulting in an inability of the world’s nations to agree amongst themselves and instead resort to one-upmanship warmongering. Faced with the lessons being drawn from the adult human competitive and destructive impulses before him, Paul used his powers to turn those impulses against the embassy, intelligence and military officials causing them to murder one another.
Dillbert: After this gruesome episode which no doubt happened in the other embassies, the kids returned to the protection and sanctuary of the church. The authorities then moved in to try and take control, militarily of course, forcing the children to protect themselves. Man, it’s beyond me how this situation could have escalated into a final showdown between the military and a bunch of kids!
Speaking of the children, it turned out that old Professor Gruber thought that the cells they had been studying earlier were “the cells of man advanced maybe a million years.” So the kids may not have been alien in origin as had been originally thought!
According to Tom, the end result would have been the death of the children especially as Rashid’s death had taught humans that Paul and the others could be killed. The only solution Tom could offer was to persuade the children to convince humanity that they meant no harm and to do so by returning to their respective embassies/

“Why are we here? For the same reason you are here”

Daniel: With explosives laid and weapons poised to unleash their destructive power, it was realized that a mistake had been made. Before the military commander could abort the attack command, it was accidentally triggered by a screwdriver – ironically a simple tool used to fix and fasten things together winds up being the agent of destruction. The church, the already crumbling and decaying symbol of innocence, sanctuary and morality is finally destroyed, and along with it the children are killed.
So you might ask yourselves, why didn’t the children like, use their powers collectively to save themselves or force their attackers to turn their weapons on themselves? Well, it seems that the kids came to the conclusion that their existence was incompatible with the primitive level of human thought and emotion they were confronted with. As a result of the lessons they learned, they chose to reject the violence that surrounded them and instead opted to sacrifice themselves.
“Either we control them or they control us, and that's the law of nature, Tom”

So Dill, what are we to conclude from this strange but still as yet officially unconfirmed event?
Dillbert: Well bro, it doesn’t matter to me whether the kids were highly evolved humans with super amazing mental powers or evil alien entities like in the Midwich Incident. The important thing is what the whole affair says about us – the human species.
It’s scary just how much we can be motivated by fear and ignorance. People were afraid of the kids because they couldn’t understand their powers, and feared what the children could become. Could they use their powers to gain control of humanity and eliminate anyone who stood in their way? Could they ultimately become superior to human beings?
It also worries me, man just how much our consciousness is confined by our binary brains where everything is seen in terms of being either ‘we’re right and they’re wrong,’ ‘our side’s good and the other side is evil,’ ‘it’s all down to us and them,’ ‘what we say and think is truth and what comes from theit mouths is fake or false.’ Even the both us viewed the events we covered in this case in similar terms. But at least we didn’t get into a punch-up like Tom and Dave did at one point. Man, nothin’ is as simple as being just black and white without any shades of grey, especially when it comes to questions of morality.
Daniel: True enough buddy. If it came to a punch between us, I’d probably kick your ass anyway! Yes indeed, I definitely saw things as Dave had done believing that the kids posed a clear and present danger to humanity and that deciding to give them a chance by reaching an accommodation with them “could destroy the entire world.” Far from seeing the children as being kids who laugh, run and play, the evidence seemed to be clear-cut as to their ability to “kill violently and hideously” as evidenced by the “murder and chaos in four embassies.”
Dillbert. Yeah, I guess so. I also stuck to my guns that the kids had no choice but to resort to violence in response to having guns pointed at them. Like Tom, I too thought it to be unfair to put the kids “in a position where they have no choice but to fight back.” Nothin' in life is really as straightforward as we are made to believe or make it out to be .
It all goes to show just how easy it is to take something that could potentially be a gift to humanity and have it weaponized for petty political and military purposes. Also, how easy it is for a stand-off between two or more forces to accidentally spiral out of control before good sense and communication can have a chance to avert calamity. Wow, man! Not much really changes with human beings where it really counts even over 60+ years.
Daniel: No, Dill. We human beings never seem to learn much from the past or from our mistakes. I also somehow don’t think we’ve heard the last of such happenings as we covered in this episode and the Midwich incident. And on that folks, we come to the end of this episode on the “Southwark Church Siege Incident.”
